2010 Workshops with Michele Wipplinger
Held at Long Ridge Farm

Basilan: Pigments & Infusions From Mali, West Africa August 26,27,28, 2010
Instructor: Michele Wipplinger

Join us for a three-day journey into the world of basilan, a textile technique that uses a variety of vegetable tinctures and minerals from Mali, West Africa. Cloth imbued with basilan is powerful and is often used to create ritual cloth for protection and healing purposes. Each person will use adaptations of traditional symbols, colorants and tools to create earthy designs on a variety of fabrics including hand woven scarves and shawls. Earthy hues will be coaxed from various colored tannins extracted from leaves, bark and fruit pod infusions and ancient colorants derived from minerals and clays. There will be options for the use stencils and painting. Each student will receive a packet of traditional tools to use in creating their cloth and a comprehensive notebook with examples, images and instructions.
